<image:caption>Tobias Keene, D.D.S. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. When not striving to keep his patients happy and healthy, he’s enjoys hiking with his family in Rock Creek Park.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ted - What is one of your favorite things to do?</image:title>
<image:caption>I started mountain biking a few months ago and I’m already addicted to it. What I like most is the challenge involved, getting exercise, and being in nature. There’s no better feeling than going down a hill dodging rocks and roots—the perfect combination of challenge and thrill! This is a picture of me at a race I did this summer. I placed first for my age group! Not too shabby for my first race.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ted - What’s your favorite movie of al time?</image:title>
<image:caption>My favorite movie is Christmas Vacation, because it’s hilarious and endlessly quotable. I always look forward to Christmas when I can watch this movie with my dad and brother-in-laws. It’s not so much about the movie itself as much as it’s about the fun quoting the movie. I’ve even gone so far as to get one of the moose head glasses.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ted - “I’ve never experienced discrimination. Everywhere I go, I’m expected to be there.” From Me, The “Other” film</image:title>
<image:caption>I come from a small community called St. Johns in Michigan. I went to the University of Michigan and studied chemical engineering. My community was mostly white with a very few Hispanics or African-Americans so growing up, I never really had a different perspective than my own culture. My family immigrated from Germany in the 1850’s. We were farmers in Germany, we are farmers in Michigan. Neither one of my parents graduated from college so I’m the first generation college graduate. Growing up in the smaller community, I really wasn’t introduced to a lot of different cultures and I never had friends that imparted that different perspective to me; so I grew up with a single-track point of view. I’d never seen that many Indian people let alone meet an Indian person until I came to Ann Arbor. So my perspective about people in general has changed completely cause growing up, I thought there were a few types of people and now I realize there’s a huge spectrum and everyone has their own backgrounds within that spectrum.</image:caption>

<image:title>Javier - What’s your favorite movie of all time?</image:title>
<image:caption>Get Out is hands down my favorite movie. It is a mix of humor, plot twists, terror, and the touch on social issues brings it to the next level. Overall, it is the complete package.</image:caption>

<image:title>Javier - Who is a hero or heroine in your life? I am an avid Apple enthusiast, so naturally I would have loved to meet Steve Jobs. His influence in the industry is unmeasurable. Apple and Steve Jobs changed technology, and sparked a new age of innovation. As I leave school and head into the working world, I hope to reflect his drive and dedication.</image:title>

<image:title>Javier - “I’m just like anyone else - but not.” From Me, The “Other” film</image:title>
<image:caption>My name is Javier. I am a 22-year-old student at The University of Michigan’s College of Engineering. I was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, but my parents brought me to the USA at the early age of 4. I am currently a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). I have spent the last 18 years of my life in a country that refuses to acknowledge me as one of its own. Still, I can’t help but to call it home and appreciate it for everything that it has provided me. While it was not my decision to enter without the proper documentation at the age of 4, it has greatly shaped my life. My legal status has brought upon many obstacles that I have fortunately been able to overcome. Being undocumented has pushed me to stand up for myself and many others. I have continuously fought to better my future regardless of how many times I have been turned away due to my status. While this government may identify me with an Alien Number, I am just like any other American college student my age and actively involved in fighting for social justice and reform.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’m a bisexual comic book artist making a living writing and drawing comics about identity politics. I’m told I have a surprisingly conservative perspective among LGBT circles but in conservative circles I’m far too liberal they say! I was diagnosed in 2013 with chronic Lyme disease, lost pretty much everything (job, friends, all my money…). Despite my ongoing battle with the disease, I rebuilt my life and am now working full time as a comic book artist and writer. I don’t particularly like talking about myself directly, preferring the language of sequential art, but if I had to say anything about my work I’d say that I hope to empower young men to stave off the temptations and addictive behaviors encouraged by our overly consumer culture and to embrace their own personal callings in life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Veronica - Who is an historical figure that you would have love to have met?</image:title>
<image:caption>A historical hero I would of loved to of met would be Martin Luther King Jr. He helped open the eyes of those that were blinded by the Separation of Equality and Civil Rights. He fought for the rights of women and not only blacks but all colors and races. Being raised by a single mom I learned what it was like to do things the hard way and independently. Meaning that a women can do the same as a man visa versa. My favorite quote from Martin is “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” I have always thought that others should be treated the way they are treated, but I have learned that there is a better way of handling life and others.</image:caption>

<image:title>Veronica - What is one of your favorite things to do?</image:title>
<image:caption>I love cutting hair, also just being a cosmetologist! I get to do all kinds of fun stuff like nails, facials, color, cutting etc. I love working with kids and experiencing babies coming in with shaggy hair and leaving with a clean cut that makes them look so much older. Most of all the fun we have talking and how happy parents are! I LOVE to reuse and recycle. I always ask my boyfriend to pull over so I can look at the shelves or anything that wouldn’t have bugs or bed bugs. Thrift shopping and garage sales excite me!!:)</image:caption>

I also walk my dog for stress but also for her!! What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you? <image:title>Veronica - “I had to be the adult in my life.” From Me, The “Other” film</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m a 19 year-old Puerto Rican the only Puerto Rican in my high school. The girl that didn’t have a group—such as the Mexican group, or the cool group. I felt acceptance in groups such as the blacks and Arabs. That acceptance was only temporary though. I had to find acceptance being independent with a single mom who struggled to take care of me due to her health having gone through three liver transplants. My mother and father had a lot of problems and my father used to beat my mom. I have brief memories of moments when he would hit her. He has not been a part of my life since I was 3-4 years of age. I was sent to Puerto Rico where I learned the ways of life through my roots and relatives in Puerto Rico. I knew that the only way I would make it out of poverty as a minority was through schooling and working hard to become more. I am a sophomore at Washtenaw Community College studying occupational therapy while working as a cosmetologist at an Ann Arbor hair studio. I am striving to do better and to be a proud successful Puerto Rican woman.</image:caption>

<image:title>You and Me, the "Other" - “Community Conversations” is a community of residents, students, organizations, and businesses in Hillsborough, New Jersey, committed to strengthening their social fabric for the betterment of the whole community. Together, they watched Me, The “Other” and then explored the different types of discrimination, bias and rejection addressed in each story and shared their own feelings and reactions to these stories. Their conversations lasted well past midnight and left them with many takeaways including this question: “What does safety mean? No judgment, no othering, connecting with a person's heart and not their circumstances, giving a person’s noble spirit a chance to breathe,” wrote one of its organizers, Nishat Ruiter.</image:title>

<image:title>You and Me, the "Other" - Spearfish, South Dakota responded to viewing the film Me, The “Other” by creating a photo exhibit that explores the diversity within their own community. “We gathered 12 individuals from the Spearfish community to be a part of a temporary photography exhibit currently installed at the Matthews Art Gallery. A collection of portraits, taken by Alison Murphy (BHSU photography student), accompanied by autobiographical statements, tells a story of our community where we all share the human experience of being an ‘other,’” wrote Elizabeth Freer in the Black Hills Pioneer.</image:title>

<image:title>Christina - 2-Year Old Jason and Me, 1974</image:title>
<image:caption>My spouse and I helped to raise our nephew, Jason, from the time that he was six weeks old. Because I’d not come out as transgender yet, everyone thought of me as his uncle. This was as close as I would ever come to being a mother, and being a mother had been a life-long dream of mine from as far back as I can remember. The picture shows Jason and me at the house we rented with several co-workers when we all worked at Browndale Group Homes, Ltd. as “Therapeutic Parents” for emotionally disturbed children. Spending quality time with Jason was a welcome relief from that other, therapeutic type of very stressful parenting. At that time, he was the light and joy in my otherwise dark and disingenuous life of pretending to be a guy for everyone else. We lost Jason to an overdose thirty-six years later, on Christmas Eve of 2010, less than twenty days after I came out as a trans-woman.</image:caption>

<image:title>Christina - Me Writing, 1970s</image:title>
<image:caption>My love of writing novels reemerged once I discovered Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five. His surreal, semi-autobiographical novel inspired me to try my hand at my own, beginning in the mid ‘90s. Since then, after dozens of rewrites, I completed a trilogy of protagonist-related stand-alone novels in 2020. After writing While Making Other Plansand Living with Imaginary Rules, but before writing What This Could Mean, I also wrote a three-volume memoir called Don’t Get Me Wrong. Since finishing my novel trilogy and three-volume memoir, I have also written what amounts to a tongue-in-cheek, book-length, self-help essay/political commentary, called, How I Became an Authentic, High-tide Clam Despite the Dawn of Trumpism.</image:caption>

<image:title>Christina - “I had a choice of whether to live or die. I chose life.” From Me, The “Other” film</image:title>
<image:caption>Oscar Wilde once quipped, “Be yourself, everybody else is already taken.” That’s sound advice, but it’s not always as simple an endeavor to undertake as one might assume. I’m a trans-woman who, as a 58-year-old, commenced her public transition on December fifth of 2010. As a result, I was eventually fired from my 31-year career of running a division of a construction company. My parents, spouse, and some friends rejected me. I also lost my house as part of a divorce settlement. I couldn’t find another job and became homeless for about four months. By the spring of 2014, while still struggling to overcome these challenges, I decided to stop living my life like a victim, which changed everything for me. I became an unconventional college student (at 62) the fall term of 2014 and graduated from Eastern Michigan University’s School of Social Work, summa cum laude, in 2019, and I had my Gender-confirmation Surgery on December first of 2020. My story is multi-layered, and yet it’s primarily about seeking and acquiring self-respect as well as self-acceptance in the face of prejudice, intolerance, and discrimination. So, because I live my life as my authentic self with dignity these days, I’m sure Oscar would approve.</image:caption>

<image:title>Christina - My Older Brother and Me, 1954</image:title>
<image:caption>I was about two years old, going on three, and Victor was around eight or nine in this picture. To this day I do not know why, but Vic called me Bean as a term of endearment. Even back then he was my protector. He always looked out for me and never teased or picked on me. A month after I turned six, in ‘58, a thirteen-year-old homophobic predator at our school violently assaulted me. (I write about this incident in Volume One of my memoir.) It took me 27 years to finally forgive him. His sexually tinged, brutal attack on me, convinced me that I could never again safely take a chance on accidentally revealing my natural femininity to anyone. This slammed and locked the door on the closet that my mom had shoved me into the year before, and I didn’t escape it until I was in my early twenties. I tried to transition at that time, but after half a dozen years, I returned to that same closet, early in ’80, and I stayed there for another 30 years to appease my parents, spouse, and society.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Born in Pakistan, my story finds its roots in my family’s struggle to find a safe and sustainable place to live. With targeted killings against Shias on a rise in Pakistan, my dad applied for, and was granted a work visa for us to come to the USA. The first few years were tough on all of us. Starting at the bottom of the socio-economic hierarchy was a challenge. At 13 years old, I found myself lost and didn’t know where I belonged amongst the various cliques. When it came time for college, I decided to put all my focus in education and a good career. My hard work led me to receive the Medallion of Excellence in Biology. I found myself moving to Ann Arbor to attend dental school at the University of Michigan where I’ve taken every opportunity to make a positive impact as a student with a Muslim name. During my third year at dental school, I was elected as the dental school’s student council president. This title and honor was a major milestone for me and I hope my story can allow many other immigrants realize how they can successfully integrate and contribute to the American society.</image:caption>

<image:title>Celia - “I didn’t realize that was my mother’s goodbye.” From Me, The “Other” film</image:title>
<image:caption>I remember what my mother once told me before she passed away while battling an aggressive form of breast cancer: “The most expensive piece of real estate is the six inches between your right and left ear. It’s how you use it that determines your destiny. We are only really limited by how we choose to challenge our mind.” She passed away when I was twelve years old. I went from living with my aunts, to living with friends of my mom, to a cousin in France, to being put into reform school. I was born in Cameroon and raised in three different continents. It was all too overwhelming. I wished my mom was present to witness or shield me from all that was happening. I felt deep sadness and a sense of abandonment. Given that my early childhood structured me well to understand hardship, sacrifice, and the importance of education; my mother’s wise advice became my ultimate refuge. I decided to put into good use the six inches between my ears and was accepted at the University of Michigan and I’m currently majoring in Cellular and Molecular Biology. I also volunteer at local hospitals and dedicate my time helping others and providing them with a sense of belonging and happiness despite their circumstances.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I cannot recall the exact details of this moments, but one thing I remember was that I cried so much when my cousin was doing my hair. Even when my cousin or my mom were adding those pearls to my hair, I was still crying. Now looking at this photo, you can’t even tell that my eyes were watering minutes before. What makes it so funny for me today is that they had to trick me by offering me “Beignets” or “puff-puff” or in English translation “mini doughnuts” for me to stop crying.</image:caption>

<image:title>AJ - “I kept it in for a long time. It was a desperate desire for normalcy.” From Me, The “Other” film</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m a gay, white, Christian man currently attending Eastern Michigan University. I grew up in Pinckney, Michigan – an isolated, small, very white town! Growing up in school, there were at most 5-10 ethnic students. It wasn’t until college when I came to terms with being gay – which meant that I had to come to terms with my Christianity and my homosexuality. At that time, my immediate decision was if I don’t have sex, it should be OK with the Church. It wasn’t a denial of the issue. My family believed that you must live the way you believe Christ would, which for me is accepting one another and wanting people to feel happy and fulfilled. A couple of years after I realized I was gay, I came out to my family and friends and I was fortunate that they were all very accepting. My father said, “You can be gay as long as it doesn’t get in the way of your studies!” It is my desire to show that the things some people might describe as “other” aren’t actually so far removed from what they consider “normal”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Keiko - What do you do to relieve stress?</image:title>
<image:caption>When I am stressed, I am usually the last to know. Often times, I realize that I had been stressed, after I have inevitably fallen asleep for several hours in the middle of the day. It is the defense mechanism my body has chosen. Personally, I have no complaints. These are some of my favorite childhood photos. You may have noticed that my brother, Frank, is in every picture. This holds true for the majority of my childhood photos. The best of times, as well as the hardest of times, I have experienced alongside my brother. When we were children, we moved often. First from Japan to Perú. Then from Perú to Japan. Finally, from Japan to the United States. With several smaller moves in-between, we were each others’ constants. An important lesson was learned when I came to the realization that in all moments. I was not alone. I learned that comfort comes from the relationships we have with others, which allow us to enjoy the gifts and deal with the burdens.</image:caption>

<image:title>Keiko - “The hardest part about identifying as an American is that other people don’t see me as an American. This is my culture. This is my home.” From Me, The “Other” film</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve lived in Ann Arbor, MI for most of my life. My parents are Peruvian and lived in Japan for ten years working as factory workers. At the age of seven having already lived in two countries, I was accustomed to change. But I would soon experience new challenges once we came to the United States. The language barrier was an immediate issue and I couldn’t depend on my parents as they didn’t speak English. From a very young age, I had to learn and work hard to represent my family and even when I learnt the language, I wasn’t mature enough to understand some situations. I translated documents and conversations my parents would have with other adults but often times I did not have the adult vocabulary to match my kid one! I think it’s so important to have dialogue about what challenges immigrants face, but especially the challenges the children of immigrants encounter.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’m 30 years old from inner city St. Louis in Missouri. I come from a single parent home—the typical story as much as I hate to say that – mom worked two jobs and my older sister practically had to raise me. I went to high school and did really good at sports. Made it to college on a full scholarship and had fun at college—actually had too much fun as I had twins when I was a sophomore at college! So I had to do everything I possibly could by continuing my education and work at overnight shifts so I could manage to go to school, play sports, work and raise my kids all at the same time. I got my graduate degree in movement science as a Strength and Conditioning Coach. Now, I reside with my family in Colorado, where I work as a Strength & Conditioning Coach for South Metro Fire Rescue (firefighters). My wife Meghan is thriving in her career in the dental field and loves being a mom of three. We are now into our 7th year of marriage and going strong, and we hope to continue to represent that love is color-blind. Our kids, Malaiki (13), Morgan (13) and Rio (2), are excelling in school and sports. Since the MTO documentary, I have reconnected with my father and began nurturing a healthy relationship. I continue to teach my children the importance of having values, integrity, family and most importantly, faith.</image:caption>

<image:title>Taylor - Tell us about yourself?</image:title>
<image:caption>This photo is from my first ballet recital. I was two and my aunt, Nanna, and cousins all traveled from Michigan to Alabama to see me perform. Right before I went on, I told my mom I had to use the bathroom and I ended up missing my entire part. Looking back I realize just how much love my family had for me to first travel across the country to see me, and then not disown me when I wasted their time and money! Not many people know I have performance anxiety, but there’s nothing I love doing more than performing. I’m a walking contradiction. My favorite place in the world is wherever my family is. I know it’s corny but I’ve moved around so much that I realized that it’s not the location that matters. To relieve stress, first, I pray. Then I reach out to those who will listen and try to channel my stress into motivation to get work done. I don’t really have a favorite movie, but the first movie I loved after the Disney movies was Pay It Forward. I have a ton of favorite books but the first one that comes to mind is Sarah Dessen’s “Just Listen”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sam - “I want to be seen as a person, not a color.” From Me, The “Other” film</image:title>
<image:caption>The stereotype of Asians only being good at math and not in sports still exists today. As I don’t fall into this stereotype, I find myself being looked down upon and questioned by the Asian community who call me an ” Asian disgrace” or question: “What kind of Asian are you?!” Hollywood has typically portrayed Asian males as desexualized, de-masculinized, and socially inept which festers the Asian stereotype. I’m a gymnast and majoring in Screen Arts and Culture in the hopes to change this portrayal of Asians. I have felt oppression from those in the Asian community for being “the other” and outside the community as “the other Asian.” Hopefully my story can give courage to those who are oppressed and hurt by stereotypes to raise above them and show the world that the other’s ignorance does not define who they are as a person.</image:caption>
