Me, The “Other” Facilitation Guide

Introduction

With prejudices pervading throughout our culture, the filmmakers were inspired to create this documentary with the hope that it would act as a bridge between our hearts and open up conversations about “otherness” and “oneness” in our human family. We hope that you'll be moved by this collection of short stories you're about to see and will reflect on two questions for post film discussion and/or during your interactions moving forward:

  1. Why is it important to share these stories and bring light to the different types of prejudices that some of us experience every day?

  2. What could motivate you to mitigate prejudice in your life and the lives of others?

Prompt Questions

  1. What surprised you in the film?

  2. Which stories challenged you in the film? How and why were they challenging?

  3. How does this film reframe your thinking to an investigative approach to learning rather than the more frequent stereotypic responses that society tends to endorse?

  4. Describe an instance where you felt a facade was necessary to avoid being judged as “not enough”.

  5. Many of the stories in the film seemed to be shared for the first time.  How do you think the director created a safe environment so that the students could be vulnerable to share their real selves? How might we do that so as to connect with a classmate or colleague in a meaningful way?

  6. With which story do you identify most? Explain the prejudice that the cast member experienced and the prejudice you have experienced. How are they similar?

  7. Which story did you find most compelling? Identify and explain the specific parts of the story that you found compelling or enlightening. Why did you find them interesting?

  8. Which story expressed a type of prejudice that you have never considered before? Describe the cast member’s experience and how their experience made you feel.

  9. Did watching Me, The “Other” change your views on any social issue or current event? Identify the stories that contributed to your change. Include your thoughts or attitudes toward the topic of the story, both before and after viewing the film.

  10. Compare and contrast two of the stories. Try to identify the common thread by stating how the stories create “oneness” with the cast members and yourself.

  11. If you were getting to know someone in the film as a friend (choose any cast member), what would you want to ask them?
